Summerville is a town in the U.S. state of South Carolina situated mostly in Dorchester County with small portions in Berkeley, and Charleston counties. It is part of the Charleston-North Charleston-Summerville Metropolitan Statistical Area as designated for statistical purposes by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget (OMB). The U.S. Census Bureau population of the Town of Summerville was 43,392 as of the 2010 census.

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 27,752 people, 10,391 households, and 7,523 families residing in the town. The population density of Summerville is 1,806.7 inhabitants per square mile (697.6/km²). There are 11,087 housing units at an average density of 721.8 per square mile (278.7/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 77.19% White, 19.38% Black or African American, 0.46% Native American, 0.89% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.67% from other races, and 1.34% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.97% of the population.
There were 10,391 households out of which 39.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.0% were married couples living together, 14.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.6% were non-families. 23.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.61 and the average family size was 3.08.
In the town the population was spread out with 28.7% of the population is under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 31.2% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 10.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 90.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.4 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $43,635, while the median income for a family was $51,469. The per capita income for the town was $20,103. About 6.1% of families and 9.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 9.3% of those under the age of 18 and 12.2% of those 65 and older.
The city has an abundance of affordable houses and lower taxes than cities such as Mt. Pleasant and Charleston; and has thus experienced rapid population growth. In 2007, it was designated a principal city of the Charleston–North Charleston–Summerville Metropolitan Statistical Area[3] Summerville is also included as part of the Charleston-North Charleston Urbanized area.
The first settlement in Summerville began following the American Revolutionary War; it was referred to as Pineland Village in 1785. Development in the area resulted from plantation owners who resided in the Charleston, SC area, and who came to Summerville to escape seasonal insects and swamp fever.[4]
Summerville became an official town in 1847. In that year, the town passed a law against cutting down trees of particular sizes, the first of such laws in the United States, and a $25 fine was issued upon any who did so without permission. Today, the motto upon the city's official seal reads "Sacra Pinus Esto (The Pine is Sacred)." [5]
In 1899, the International Congress of Physicians (or "Tuberculosis Congress"[4]) listed Summerville to be one of the two best areas in the world for treatment and recovery of lung and throat disorders. It received such notation due to its dry and sandy location, and the many pine trees in the area that release turpentine derivatives into the air. This notation is credited with aiding the commercial and residential development of Summerville.[5]
Starting in 1941, the town of Summerville has hosted the annual Flowertown Festival. It is the largest arts and crafts festival in South Carolina. It is held the first weekend of April in the Summerville Azalea Park. In 1925, these flowers led Summerville’s Chamber of Commerce to adopt the slogan "Flower Town in the Pines."
